EVENT
Welcome to the Inaugural South Maui Triathlon at Wailea which will take place on the island of Maui in beautiful Wailea on Sunday, June 12, 2011. This event is an Olympic distance triathlon.
BIKE CHECK IN: Bike check in will be from 1:00pm to 3:00 pm. on Saturday.
MANDATORY MEETING: Pre-race meeting the day before race day on Sat at 3:00pm at the packet pickup ballroom. LLS will have there own pre-race meeting that evening.
EXPO: The expo will open from 9:00am to 3:00 PM. on Saturday.
BIKE TRANSITION: The bike transition will be open at 4:30am on Sunday morning.
RACE START TIME: 6:00am There will be TWO heats:
- FIRST HEAT estimated start time: 6:00am – ALL MEN
- SECOND HEAT start time: FIVE minutes later – ALL WOMEN & RELAY TEAM SWIMMERS
(Please listen carefully to any additional instruction or changes during the pre-race meeting)
PARKING: Event parking is located at the Wailea Special Event parking lot, which is immediately on the left after entering Wailea from the highway.
REGISTRATION TABLE: No registration or packet pickup will be available on race morning.
SWIM CAPS: Swim caps are required. One will be provided for you.
TIMING CHIP: Present your race number for timing chip pickup on race morning. Timing chips must be worn during entire race in order to get a transition/finish time. (Note for Relay Teams: timing chip must be handed off at each transition)
AID STATIONS: Bike course – There will be an aid station with water bottles on the bike course. Run course – Five aid stations will be available. (HEED & water)
FINISH LINE: Post-race refreshments. Event shirts will be given out at the finish line area along with shell leis and finisher medals.
TIMING: Timing will be provided by Pacific Sport Events & Timing. Finisher cards will be available at www.finishercards.com the next day.

3 overall athletes, male/female; Age groups (5 yr increments) top 3, male/female; Relay teams (men/women/mix) top 3
REGULATIONS: This is a USA Triathlon sanctioned race. We ask for your cooperation in following the swim-bike-run race regulations:

SWIM COURSE AND GUIDELINES
Courses: 1.5K Swim Course - This very safe 1,500 meter swim will be a single loop course that will take athletes along the shore for great spectator viewing. The swim course will be monitored by life guards, jet skis, kayakers and boats. Proposed course enters and exits from the beach fronting the Grand Wailea. Time Cut-off 7:30 AM
• PLEASE SEED YOURSELF ACCORDING TO YOUR SWIMMING ABILITY; fast in front, slower in back
• No floatation devices, fins, paddles, snorkels, etc…
BIKE COURSE AND GUIDELINES
40K Bike Course - The 40K Bike Course will start from the transition area at the Wailea Beach Marriott Resort parking lot.
The course is two loops. As you leave the transition area, this will officially start of your bike leg. RIDING YOUR BIKE IN THE TRANSITION AREA IS PROHIBITED. When you get to the road you will mount your bike and ride it out of the Marriott Beach Resort entrance.
From the Marriott entrance you will turn right onto Wailea Alanui Dr. You will then go south to the first turn-around. This is just past the Makena Beach Resort and at that point in the road it is called Makena Alanui Road. There is a tunnel that goes under the road. Just past the underground tunnel there is a asphalt path on the right side of the road. Take that path to the bottom and follow it to the right then thru the tunnel. There will be hay bales as you make the right to go into the tunnel. Exit the tunnel and proceed up the path and follow the cones and volunteers. You will retrace the bike course to Kaukahi Street. It is across the road from the Kea Lani Hotel. Turn right on to Kaukahi Street and proceed up this steep half-mile hill to the stop sign. Turn left at the stop sign on to Kalai Waa Street. Continue three-quarters of a mile until this road ends at Wailea Ike Drive. Turn right and go two-tenths of a mile to Piilani Hwy. Ride north to a turn-around point immediately before the traffic signal at Kilohana Drive. There will be an aid station after you turn around and start the second lap of the bike course.
We encourage you to take a fresh bottle of water before heading back on the return leg of each lap. There are no provisions for the return of individual water bottles.
After this turn around proceed South on Piilani Hwy and turn right on Wailea Ike Drive. (You will be heading back to the tunnel turn around.) Turn left on to Kalai Waa Street then turn right on to Kaukahi Street. At the bottom of the hill turn left and continue down Wailea Alanui Dr. to the tunnel turn around and back on Wailea Alanui Dr. Heading North. Turn right on to Kaukahi Street and proceed up this steep half-mile hill to the stop sign. Turn left at the stop sign on to Kalai Waa Street. Continue three-quarters of a mile until this road ends at Wailea Ike Drive. Turn right and go two-tenths of a mile to Piilani Hwy. Ride north to a turn-around point immediately before the traffic signal at Kilohana Drive. After this turn around proceed South on Piilani Hwy and turn right on Wailea Ike Drive. Turn left on to Kalai Waa. Make a right turn onto Kaukahi Street and then a right turn onto Wailea Alanui Drive at the bottom of the hill. You will then proceed north on Wailea Alanui Drive to the entrance of the Marriott Beach Resort. Turn left into the Marriott Beach Resort entrance to the bike transition area.
Note: Race management will provide mobile bike support on sections of this 40K course.
• Time Cut-off 10:00 AM
• Participants MUST WEAR A HELMET which must be buckled before leaving the transition area.
• It is recommended to wear a bike jersey, gloves, bike shorts, and eye protection (clear lens preferably, if it is a cloudy day.)
• Riding your bike in the transition area is prohibited.
• When passing other bikers please pass on the left and yell “on your left”. Please pass safely.
• If you need to stop on the bike course or need to walk your bike in some areas, please stay on the far right side of the road.
• All competitors are required to follow the prescribed course and to stay within all directed areas. Cutting the course is an obvious violation and going outside the course is a safety issue.
• Carry a spare tube, pump or CO2 cartridges, tire levers and “drink” (i.e. water, sports drink, etc…)
RUN COURSE AND GUIDELINES
10K Run Course -The run course exits the transition area the same area at the exit/enter of the transition area. Exit the transition area and out of the Marriott drive way and head south to Kaukahi. Turn right down to Makena Rd. running the length of it and back onto Makena Alanui for a short distance. Turn right on Makena Rd., to Makena Landing where you will turn around and retrace the route back to the Marriott to the finish line.
• Time Cut-off 12:00 PM.
• All runners are required to wear race numbers at all times during the run.
• Numbers must face the front and be clearly visible at all times, or you may receive a time penalty.
• Barefoot running is not allowed; proper shoes must be worn.
RACE AMENITIES
Race Amenities - all participants will receive a colorful dri-tech tee shirt and finishers will receive a great inaugural medallion and complimentary massage. All participants, their family members, and volunteers are welcome to the award ceremony race morning.
AFTER PARTY
Awards party and refreshments will be held at the Luau area about 10:00am on the Marriott grounds.
REMINDERS:
• Do not leave any equipment or personal gear on the race course.
• Foul, harsh, argumentative or abusive language or other un-sportsman like conduct directed at race officials, USA triathlon officials, volunteers, spectators, or fellow athletes is forbidden.
